I'm just home from watching 'The Departed' - Was an Excellent film.
I didnt really like the ending tho, what was that all about. I wanted Leo to run away with the woman and the baby and live happily ever after hehe.
ANYWAY... i dont know if i missed it, but what was in that brown envelope leo gave her? He said 'only open if something happens to me, or if i say so'
Help! its bugging me xxx
Oh and what did everyone think of the film

I just read an answer to another post, it makes sense now..
she opened it up- that's why she didn't respond to Matt Damon when they were leaving the funeral. We don't know what was written in any of it- i am assuming it had Mark Wahlberg's characters name referenced, she must have contacted him- which is how Damon's character got killed too- i'm so rubbish with names in the film. Oly remember Quintin's name... so that's what i think.
Excellent film too!! Hail Scorsese finally did it after a long time!!
This makes loads of sense, Leo passed the info onto the other cop guy, and he shot damon at the end.
It take a bit of brain bashing to work it out and solve the story x

Di Caprio give the envelope to Damons pregnant girlfriend with the instructions that she should only open it if anything happens to him.
Damons pregnant girlfriend intercepts a different envelope sent by Di Caprio directly to Damon that contained the CD with the recording on it.
Therefore, when Di Caprio dies (sorry folks if you've not seen it yet) the envelope must have been opened by Damon's girlfriend. (Remember the cold shoulder treatment he got from her at the funeral?)
Why did Whalbergs character know Damon was a mole? Because in the brown envelope Di Caprio had this evidence with instructions it should be sent to Whalberg, the only man he could really trust since Sheen's character was brown bread.
About 30 mins was cut from the film. I'd say it would all be clear in the Directors Cut if there ever is one. Great film though.

It was never opened! Have no idea what was in it! bugged me for ages after! It was a rather bizarre ending, but the rest of the film was great! very well acted by all! It did get a bit confusing in parts as Matt Damon and Leo looked slightly alike and it kept confusing me!

I don't think she opened it though. I believe that it contained the "Citizens" papers. Mark Wahlberg's character only killed Matt Damon because he found out what he did.
I thought it was an EXCELLENT film and highly recommend it

I believe the envelope contained all the tapes and evidence he aquired so that it would clear his name if he got into trouble or killed and marked as a criminal. Either that it was blackmail material for her to use. My friend (also a Leo fan) didn't like the ending either but I thought it was pretty cool, overall a fantastic movie too.

Wow - I can't believe it, but I completely forgot about that envelope until you just mentioned it!! Duh! I can't help you there, I guess.
However, I thought the movie was FANTASTIC! Seriously, I was amazed by how great it was - Leonardo totally deserves an Oscar nod for his performance, seriously.
I was shocked at the ending - especially from the point of Leo's character exiting the elevator and when he got shot... wow!
I guess that's why they called it "The Departed," though, huh?!
: )

You've got the asnwer then! I just came back from seeing it aswell and I thought it was amazing. I laughed out loud in parts, jumped off my seat in others and had a tear in my eye during times.
I say this after every Leo flick... but my, he is sexy.

The film was great. The envelope had money in it to take care of her and the baby after he was gone because that was his child. That is what I think the envelope must have in it anyways.

I believe that it was where to find al the tapes of Costello's conversations. When DiCaprio's character (I don't remember char names) confronted Damon's character, he only alluded to the tapes, and I think he gave their location to the doctor.
