During the Restoration in England [1660] up to the late Hanoverians [1800], women wore those little tricorns when riding - they weren't much worn in other settings.

There is a Museum of Costume in Bath, England - very cool if you are interested in fashion.

I think they might have enjoyed a bit of vogue just prior to the French Revolution--and just in case anyone doesn't know, it refers to a three-cornered hat.
