I have recently been getting a loud hissing noise coming from under the hood. I traced the noise to the drive belt area. originally I thought the A/C compressor clutch was worn, but have discovered that may not be the case. when I turn on the A/C the clutch engages and spins at belt speed, also the hissing noise stops. if I turn off the A/C the noise immediately returns and will even hiss for a few seconds after turning off the engine. Any help out there?

the a/c clutch plate is rubbing against the compressor pulley. there should be 0.30 gap between the two. in order to fix you need a special tool to pull the clutch plate away from pulley. or need to replace compressor .

You may have some "junk" in the A/C clutch. Spraying it with a lubricant may help clean it out and make it stop hissing. Spraying it with water shouldn't hurt it either. One poster said it would short out, if that was the case then we shouldn't drive our vehicles in wet weather or on wet roads because water gets thrown everywhere under the hood when we are driving down the road. The likelyhood of a short is a small possibility but I would try the lubricant first.

I would warn against spraying the clutch with anything, it may short it, cause it slip. or it may seize and not release.
I can't figure the hissing noise after the engine is off. Seems you should be able to track that one down. May need a helper to watch as engine stops.

my best guess is that the clutch may not be worn, but may have a little dust or dirt in it. try just spraying the a/c clutch with a lubricant to alleviate the problem. if that does not fix it, try spraying it with water.
