identity is an illusion.
it is more objective to study character, or life_style.
you learn it.you choose it.you produce it.

Ok, this is a good question. I can only speak for myself because I know me best of all. (Thinks it's that obvious an answer do you?)
A lot of teenagers don't have a clue when it comes to identity and that is also true of most adults as well. They follow trend to trend and morph into what they think is a society standard. When you ask them why they are the way they are most times you get the "I dunno" answer.
Through out my life I have never followed trends. It has led to a small amount of ridicule from time to time but That's their problem. I've mentioned in other posts that I have long hair. I've always hated short hair so that is one of my identifying traits. I've always had a thing for the dark side of life and have always had skulls and bones around as well as other fun things. To this day they're still a part of me. There are some that identify me by that. Then there's the art thing. There's a lot of people that identify me by that that have never met me face to face. There are many other things that give me identity. Some aren't as obvious as others.
It's never one thing that gives you identity. It's looks, deeds, attitude, likes, dislikes. Everything that makes up you! Be true to yourself and you will never have to question who you really are.

Its firstly your parents and their values (spiritual, cultural, moral, political) and then the same that has been passed down from THEIR parents.
Then its the socio-economic area that you were brought up in; was it a council estate/ social housing ('the projects' if you were in the US). Who brought you up an instilled your overwhelming attitude towards life/ society within you?
Were your parents/ guardians living on welfare benefits? If so - what attitude did they have to this - did they want to break free from it or was it acceptable to them?
Its a REALLY complicated and mixed up business, but its NOT something to be frightened of and we all need to do more to learn more about 'what make us - US'. You may find that your 'identity' changes according to what your age (and your emotional maturity is). This is the amazing thing about identity - its so maleable and it can really progress and become more exciting and rewarding as we get older...

The way we look is part of our identity and that comes from the family gene pool. The environment in which we are raised adds another dimension to our identity. Talk to someone from New Jersey or Georgia and see if their accent identifies what part of the USA they are from. As we mature, add education and the career we choose. Many adults are classified by their chosen careers. We must not forget personality! Every person's personality is as unique as their fingerprints and that is part of what makes them who they are!

Identity is your personality. That is shaped by your individual experiences. And the more you live your life, this behaviour identity makes you more and more unique.
Identity is what the world knows who you are. It is your name, address, phone numbers, date of birth, ssn etc.
Identity is how you identify with your heritage. For example, your identity is with your country, your race, your social class, your education, and your social network (friends and family).

Read "The Face of Another" by Kobe Abe, a Japanese fiction writer. It is a fascinating story about our perception of identity.

could it be you want to know what sort of things that identify you with your artwork? seeing that this is under visual arts, if thats the case, the answer i give you would be: hrmz, i could give you example, for instant: keith harring-crawling baby, georgia o'keeffe-enlarge/closeup flowers, vangogh-his brushstroke and yellows, warhol-portrait of famous people, Basquiat-crown, etc etc, so you got to find your identity, and keep doing it untill its recognised as yours.
