Because it is a fundamental control on our government that is written into the constitution. Effectively, dictatorships have no habeas corpus right. There is no way to find out what happens to someone who is taken by the police. That person can simply disappear.

Is this going to happen overnight in Ameria? Most likely not. But we give up such rights at our peril. It is now possible under American law for the police or FBI or some other government organization to lock someone up in an un-revealed location, refuse them access to a lawyer, and never actually bring them to a court or charge them with an offense.

You may believe this will never happen to you; and you are likely right. But the educated in a civilized society must protect the rights of those citizens that are uneducated, poor, or otherwise unable to protect themselves.
