Yikes... disregard the above. It always irritates me when people who don't live here chime in with all these bad answers about junkie chains and the worst tourist trap restaurants in town. The only decent restaurant listed above was Fior di Italia, and it burned down a year ago.
Take them to Sam's on Belden Alley, down in the Financial District. Wonderful old San Francisco seafood at very reasonable prices, and far away from the tourist crowds. Another great place on Belden Alley is Plouf if you like mussels. Belden Alley is wonderful because the whole alley is outdoor cafe restaurants like in Paris, so you can just walk the short length of the alley and compare menus of the 7-8 restaurants there, then choose the one everyone likes. You can usually get in without reservations.

San Francisco is a mecca of great eating...attempt a number of those places: Moose's, Slanted Door, Kokkari, Ozumo, l. a. Folie, Cha Cha Cha's (might desire to have Sangria), Fog city Diner, Suppenkuche (get a lager boot, carry pals)

well if they like Mexican food, take them out out for Mexican food, it is not adventurous and it still has the kick to it that you want. I personal have never been to San Francisco but i know that here is a five star restaurant that is inexpensive in the town.
