Looking to advance my career in public sector in the UK and I know a lot of big names have doctorates. However I also hear MBAs are becoming more useful especially with thew new MPA for public sector managers. Since I have but one life etc etc (and only one lot of savings more to the point) I could only really go for one. Which should I do?

Ph.D.

Why? With it, you can accomplish something - make a major contribution to your chosen field - self satisfaction is immense.

MBA? Sure, you can do that after Ph.D. I know some people who have done it. They have a meteoric rise within the corporation or there is one - whom I know personally well - is self employed and very *very* rapidly progressing. He is one hot-shot of a guy.

In the final analysis, how much time do you have? Set aside 4 to 5 years for a Ph.D (3 if you are super smart) and 1 to 1.5 years for MBA (part time). You can do MBA while you are employed.

Go for Ph.D now.

You should only do a PhD if you know in your heart that you HAVE to do it.

If this is about practicality and career, I very much doubt that a PhD will help in the public sector except in very specific areas. Do the MBA if you can get into a good school.
