Swimming with Sharks was superb but think Usual Suspects may clinch it (a deserved Oscar). His appearance in Se7en was good too tho' but not long enough for it to be 'his best'. Any thoughts?

I agree American Beauty was a very strong perfomance but the vulnerability and multitude of emotions he shows in Usual Suspects whilst being such an evil man is true acting talent (although don't think the actors new who Kaiser was during filming. Rumour has it Gabriel Byrne was convinced it was him right up until the Premier!).
If you've not seen Swimming With Sharks suggest you see that too. A good insight into the cut-throat (literally!) Hollywood movie industry.
And what ever happened to Frank Whaley who's plays a pretty good 'young pup' trainee exec in it? Last time I saw him it was a bit part in Pulp Fiction during the 'I stike down upon thee' scene

ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING he's been in has been fabulous. Even if the story & the script sucked. But I'm w/ you... "Usual Suspects" rules!!!!

There was a small film he made a few years ago called The Shipping News which is just amazing. It's also got Julianne Moore and Dame Judi Dench in it too, utterly compelling viewing, the atmosphere of the movie only adds to some stunning performances all round

Usual Suspects has got to be the best. Pretending to be a cripple and then right at the end where you find out he is Kaiser Solsey just did it for me. I just never expected that. I just had to give that man a round of applause at the end cos haven't seen a better twist that you just did not even guess was coming!

I didn't really pay attention to Kevin Spacey until I saw him in "American Beauty" and "The Life of David Gale"; both of which I thought were superb. I would say he played a tougher character in "The Negotiator," which was quite entertaining. He is a great action but I find his acting in American Beauty to be the absolute best.

american beauty, nobody could have shown the utter helplessness when he is watching the half time entertainment at the basketball game like that. k-paz is close, just a bit soft at the end. im not sure about usual suspects, i think his performance was aided by good editing

The Usual Suspects. Kevin Spacey completely stole the show. His every facial expression, shifty eyes, body movement was perfect. I have watched it many times on DVD and every time he was on screen I was spellbound. Where on earth did he learn to act like that?

Loved him in all that have already been mentioned as well as his portrayal of Bobby Darrin in Beyond the Sea and as songwriter Johnny Mercer, Midnight in the Garden of Evil.

I agree with you...but I just loved his performance as Lester Burnham in American Beauty. And whenever I think about Kevin Spacey, I think of him sitting in his living room when his wife walks in...and says
"Uh, who's car is that out front?" and he says...
"Mine. 1970 Pontiac Firebird. The car I've always wanted and now I have it. I rule!"
His performance as a depressed middle class white guy is just perfect...I know people like him. *cough*
