I can push the switch sometimes and it will go into 4x4hi or low. but sometimes it wont go into 4x4, doesnt even sound like it is doing anything. If we shut the truck on and off sometimes then we could put it in 4x4 mode again, or if we drive for a while. Any help would be great

ok the people who have responded dont know their new vehicles ok the transfer case on this explorer has an electric motor on it when u turn the switch the motor selects 4 hi 4 lo 4 auto for u so u dont have to lock in hubs or worry about vaccum lines and there are no sensors if the 4wd light blinks there is a code in the ecm for the problem and it will only blink when u select a position and the transfercase motor does not respond the computer watches the signals to and from that motor the motor itself is the sensor so if the 4wd light blinks take it to a dealership or a mechanic if its not blinking just not engaging then certain condtions for the 4wd are not being met meaning ur moving vehicle speed signal from speed sensor or torque converter clutch is engaged or some sensor is telling the ecm to not engage the 4wd see ur owners manual for those details hope this helps

Sounds to me like an actuator of some sort. Either it is not getting the signal from the switch or you may have a vaccum line disconnected. I believe that most late model 4X4's now use vaccum to actually change the transfer case into 4 wheel drive. I also suppose it could be the switch too. Do you get the lights saying it is in 4x mode when you switch it and it doesn't engage? Just some things to think about.

There's a sensor on the transfer case that tells the shift computer what position the case is in. They go bad a lot on Explorers. If the switch readings are messed up the computer will just keep the case in 2wd.
It's pretty easy to replace. You can get it off without pulling the transfer case or anything. I had to solder down some loose contacts in mine and everything was OK.
Somebody good can tell pretty easy what's wrong by looking at the shift module with a voltmeter. They can check the button you're pushing, the control wires to the transfer case and the switch readings from the transfer case. Unfortunately, plenty mechanics are sub human halfwits who will just start replacing $600 items at random as long as you'll pay for them.
