Why single out the white, most people are like that. I try to smile and chat to people (I am one of those white English) but get looked at as if I'm some sort of nutter. I think it's part of the 'I don't want to be involved' culture which is becoming prevalent not just in the UK but in other countries also.
You could sit next to me anytime.
GOT IT!! The old British aloof and stiff upper lip brigade.

gee - thanks to all the anti-southerners out there - i am white, british and live in the south of england - i smile at people in the street and in shops and generally get a really good response and a laugh - most people are just waiting for that first contact. inner-city living in any part of the uk is necessarily less friendly than suburban or rural - simply because with more people there are more freaks and nasties and what you perceive as rudeness is probably just fear. keep smiling. ;o)

You know what? We are brought up like that and it takes us most of our adult-hood to get rid of the habbit. We don't mean it. We don't know we're doing it. At least I didn't. I've found out how to be friendly and it's so much better. It isn't personal towards you. Try smiling at everyone no matter what response you get - I do. It makes me feel good and sometimes I get the best smile back.

Its not just you its everyone especially in the south. I lived down south for 30 years and moved up north to Yorkshire 4 years ago. It totally freaked me out when people smiled at me in the street and spoke!! I'm used to it now though and I am as friendly as the rest of them.

Maybe you fit in so well, that, they treat you like everyone else? Typically, strangers don't smile at me unless there's a just cause. Just my opinion.
