You have to be kidding.
If you know even a little bit about the band, you know that every night they played, it was an adventure into sound. Every song they ever played was always played with spontaneous instrumental sections (jams). There were parts of the show where they would totally leave any melody behind and just experiment before returning to the melody of the song again. There have been many jam bands since the Dead, but none have done as much exploring as the Dead did. The Dead were far more than entertainers, I really believe that they were modern day alchemists of sound. What the Dead did was spiritual.

PS-I'd be willing to bet that the people that answer this question, "Yes", haven't listened to more than a few bootleg concerts, probably none at all.

Maybe their talent as a band was. I really like some of their songs (not really the few popular ones they had though) I love Terapin Station. I think it was sort of cool that they had such a following though. I think that some people are like that with the band Phish now but not to the extent that it was with the Grateful Dead. I think that in itself was pretty awesome that they had such a huge following of die hard fans.

No, Terribly, awefully exaggerattedly UNDER rated. No love from music labels or radio stations except once and a great while Casey Jones, or Touch of Grey.

I am not a big fan, but I don't think they were overrated. They had a loyal following and they gave their fans what they wanted.

Their die hard fans (pardon the pun) weren't concerned about rating them, they just loved them to death. (Pardon the Pun again)
