People wish to think it's Freemasonry but it's not. The "Secret Society" of Freemasonry doesn't go back to biblical times, though its teachings do.
To explain.... in 'ancient times' each labor group protected its work by forming groups (or unions). These groups would meet in private and discuss the work at hand. They formed passwords, handshakes and other signs so when they travelled from region to region others within the trade group would know each other. The woodworkers, the Freemasons (stone workers), all met in "secret".
Modern day Freemasons aren't exactly of the same "secret society" of the Bible but they do try to emulate those times in their teachings. Can't go into further details on that though.
With THAT said... there were societies that met in secret, such as the Zoroastrotarians, Christians, and so on. It's pretty difficult to say who the FIRST group was that acted in secret.
