It depends on the fish.
But all fish needs a seperate tank. a 10 gallon tank will do with a wet dry filter or something. and nothing else..( no gravel) but maybe a few plants for the eggs and fry and a heater.

But the initial process is to feed the parents really good food high in protein. Check for the female's abdomen for plumbness... that's a good sign it's ready.. Males are ready anytime.. ain't that the truth.

Once things are ready, move the parents to the new tank.

^^^What he said^^^ Though i dont understand the no rocks thing. I never did that. And do your research, some breeds are live bearers some are egg layers. Also some of the live-bearers will eat there young. When the female is about ready to pop put her in a breeder. A mini-tank the hangs inside your present tank. If you are breeding both types I would opt for a combonation breeder.

Please specify what type of fish. Livebearers, such as guppies, platies, swordtails need one type of set-up, Egg layers such as many schooling fish - tetras, barbs, danios, rasboras need a different type. Cichlids (angelfish, oscars, rams, kribensis, Africans, etc.) do parental care for their eggs and babies, and so need different treatment. Each type of fish has its own requirements.

Most important is that the fish be healthy and well fed (and obviously, male and female), and a second tank, both for breeding and for raising fry would be necessary in most cases as well.

That said, if you have livebearers (the easiest) then a lot of plants floating on the surface would be the biggest help.
