Gray hair is typically a result of natural aging. Pigment in the hair shaft comes from special cells at the root (base) of the hair. These cells are genetically programmed to make a certain amount of pigment (melanin) at specific ages. At some point in the aging process, these cells make less and less pigment until the hair has very little pigment. White hair has no pigment, and gray hair has some but not as much as a red, black or brown hair.

It's genetic at least in my case. I had gray or white hairs show up when I was 15. My mother was graying when she was in her 30's. I started to really get gray hair the time I turned 35 and it has been gradual. At 52, I still have some black hair at about 40 percent.

The good news he's not going bald or is he?

It can be genetic... I noticed my first gray hair at 16 and I know that my grand father on my father side was completely white before 30...

Do worry with that... If he doesn't feel good about it he can use hair coloration products...

Gray hair has nothing to do with age. It's all genetics.

It might be related to hormones or stress. Sometimes some people just start putting grey hair early.

It could just be premature graying. My mom started going gray in her early twenties. (Of course, that she blames on me...)
