Rest. It will take four or five days to heal if you totally rest and don't do anything at all, just lay stil, sit with your feet up or move around very slow. Take hot baths. Muscle relaxers or narcotics will be helpful only because it is hard to be still for that long. The pain will slowly dissapear and motion will return day-by-day. It is important when the pain is gone to take one more day of rest, even though you feel fine. That will stop it from coming right back.
Now you have to think what you did to cause it...bending over constantly?...not getting enough sleep?...not lifting properly? Not eating well? Change your behavior or it will happen again. Get a velcro back belt from the hardware store and get used to using it. Position it carefully and make it just tight enough to give you some support. You can even double them up (one low and one high) for better support. Yeah, back belts look a little funny, but not as bad as walking with a cane so try and get used to it. It will help your back stay good after it heals.

Go to the chiropractor and make sure its a good one. I pinched my nerve in my back almost 2 years ago, I couldn't set, lay, or stand for more than 5 minutes, I dealt with that for a week. Then went to a chiropractor, I like to call him the Duck, because he was a quack. Well he popped my back once a day for about a week until I had to stop going to him. He wasn't really making it any better, I could set, stand and sleep now, but I had a MASSIVE bruise on my back from him. I have been to two others since him and they tell me that he is the worst ever and that the pain i still feel wont go away, because of the damage he did. I have pain in my left let, can't feel the whole outside of my leg from my knee to my ankle. It hurts to touch the calf of my left leg and I will wake up several times in the middle of the night with SEVERE pain in that leg. That and when I first stand up after setting for awhile I can't hardly walk because my leg is so stiff..I reccomend you get yourself to a good Chiropractor and soon. Or you will suffer, in more ways than one.
