It's hard to say if one is better than the other...

Black and white films were certianly made with more thought to implying colour..If you ever watched the old Superman TV series with George Reeves, his costume was grey to imply blue, brown to imply red on the cape, and white to imply yellow. Same with Bette Davis in Jezebel...the dress that she wore to the ball, which was supposed to be red, was inactuality brown to look like it could be red on Black and White film.

It took a lot more work to make black and white films look more lifelike because of the limitations of the medium and Ted Turner should be shot for colourizing them.

But on the same token, films shot in colour can concentrate more on other issues...storyline, special effects (which are not always good), etc. Also, because they're newer, they deal with all manner of subject matter that no one in the good old days would ever even approach.

Over all I think each form stands on it's own for different reasons...though I would like to have seen what they would have done with the Wizard of Oz had technicolour not been available at the time.

That's like saying if a singer is Black, but all the producers and sound technicians are White, then the music is White. I guess in such films about slavery, Whites are used because the protagonist usually develops from a regular middle class person into someone with a huge understanding of slavery and resentment towards it, thus setting an example for other Whites who know little about the subject. Also consider economics before race: the film industry is dominated by White actors and directors, so there are more films with mainly White casts than Black ones. Also, slavery is no doubt a very interesting subject, but so are other historical subjects such as the Holocast and the World Wars. The fact that there are only a handful of films about slavery, combined with the fact that most American films have mainly White casts, PLUS the fact that Blacks are a minority in the USA means that most films about slavery will have White casts and whatever happens Blacks will be going to see them anyway.

Good Black And White Movies

I own a lot of movies. I like color and black/white movies. They both have their advantages or disadvantages.

I like movies without talking because the actors have to say more in their facial expressions and body language to get their point across. It's also fun to make up your own dialogue. I think the music a lot of times is more carefully matched (and dramatic) in silent movies than in regular movies these days. I feel that silent movies are corny and cute.

I like black and white because of the effect that happens when it's used. Black and white also reminds of days past. It gets me thinking about what life was like in the 40's, 30's and before.

Both are good to watch, but I prefer to watch B&W; it's more classic and without it, no one wouldve gotten the idea to make color films.

Color! Black and white is boring. I'd rather be able to see what the people are saying that see it.It's more real when they are a ctulally saying it that when the words that they are saying are written out.

It's tough to pick one. I would want Star Wars or Jurassic Park in BW. But something like "Schindler's List" was perfect in BW.
