First off, looking hot really doesn't matter. What matters is having a good time and being comfortable. Definately take some lessons and definately be smart about what you wear.

First things first. Never wear cotton. Cotton absorbs water and then looses 70% of it's insulating qualities once wet. This is Bad. You should buy a good set of long underwear made from a poly-pro material or wool or silk. The same goes for your socks. Wool is awesome in a sock and don't fall for the misconception of wearing the thickest sock or wearing multiple pairs. One pair of medium thickness socks should do the trick. Wearing two pairs of socks will increase the volume of your foot and can cut off blood circulation a bit which will make you cold.

Now that that is out of the way, if it's going to be very cold you should look into heavy layers to wear over your long underwear. I like fleece. It breaths very well and transports water so it won't get soaked and keep you cold.

Next thing to think of are your gloves. I suggest getting the nicest pair you can afford. There is nothing worse than cold wet fingers and seeing as how you are a beginner you maybe using your hands on the snow alot.

Now for outerwear. There really are so many good brands out there I couldn't just recommend one. Go to a good shop and ask someone to help you out. Ski Babe was correct in that windproof is important but as a beginner something very waterproof will be more important (also remember that a waterproof jacket is usually windproof while a windproof jacket is usually not waterproof).

You will need a good hat. You'll loose much of your body heat through your head so you need to be sure keep that covered up. I personnaly like helmets, not only are they the warmest driest hat you'll ever wear but they will save your noggin' in a bad fall. Regardless of which you go with a hat is very important.

I have never, ever seen a resort where you could rent goggles. If it's snowing you definately need to buy a pair. If it's sunny then you need sunglasses. The winter sun can get extremely bright out on the snow so you must protect your eyes at all times. Speaking of winter sun, don't forget the sun screen even in the dead of winter. There's nothing worse than trying to looking good in the hot tub after a day of skiing with your face peeling off.

Have fun

Are you serious? Hon, brands aren't going to help you look hot, your skiing will totally expose you for a beginner. Don't sweat it, and DON'T go out and buy tons of new ski gear you will use once.

My advice to all beginners: know where you are skiing. If you are skiing in the east, be prepared for nasty conditions, including cold, bad weather, etc. Out west you need to be prepared for cold. Check out the resort you have lined up.

Also, make sure you have lessons scheduled. You won't look hot if you have absolutely no idea what you are doing, and worse, you'll look even stupider if you go and hurt yourself because you didn't understand or know what to do and have to spend the rest of the day in the emergency room.

As for dress, there isn't a real look for skiers right now. You want a basic windproof jacket, wind proof pants and a good hat that also blocks wind. See about renting goggles at the resort. And honestly, you will not enjoy your trip if you spend the whole time trying to look your best. I suffer from bad helmet hair and my friends tease me about it when I get up on the podium and I'm running my fingers through my hair, trying to give it more life. Give it up, and have fun with your friends.

Additional:

What was I thinking, renting goggles? My mistake, you can't rent goggles at a ski resort, but I have been places where you can rent almost all of your other clothing, including helmets. Not that I reccomend it (wearing someone else's clothes gives me the heeby-jeebies) but renting a helmet is definately a smart decision.

If you are very concerned about just "looking hot", I recommend that you forget all that ski jazz, and just wear a nice sweater with a pair of well fitted jeans...then sit around the lodge and drink espresso's while your friends have a great time on the slopes.

As usual, "skibabe" and "paul g" beat me to the punch. In general, if you ever find their advice around here in winter sports, you can usually trust it...they both always include lots of good info. While I have lived on ski slopes since the age of 4 (I'm in my 30's now), I always enjoy reading the answers from those two!

Let me just emphasize the most important stuff:

* HAVE A GREAT PAIR OF GLOVES / MITTS

You will be spending a ton of time picking yourself up out of the snow. Plus, snow is made of tiny ice crystals which are sharp! People who fall and have their bare skin exposed to the snow tend to lose some skin. Bandaids all over your hands won't help you in the "hot" department!

* GET LESSONS!

I taught skiing for five years or so, and you can always tell those who got lessons from those who didn't. An hour and a half with a qualified instructor will do wonders. DO NOT GET LESSONS FROM A BOYFRIEND/HUSBAND/SO. This will lead to separation, divorce, or possibly murder! Trust me on that! I've seen it! Before you even get your rental skis, sign up for lessons!

* DRESS IN LAYERS, WITH A DECENT PAIR OF SNOW PANTS.

As mentioned, when you first start, you will be in the snow a lot. Even if not (you may be naturally athletic, which I have seen), a good instructor will "force" students to fall if they aren't falling on their own, so the student can learn how to stand back up. Not as easy as you think it may be! So, good snow pants will be nice to have.

During your first lesson, you will be doing quite a bit of walking about, with skis, without skis, uphill, and downhill. So if you dress in layers, you can shed a jacket, and maybe a sweater, and just go in a turtleneck or other long sleeve athletic wear. Once you are past the walking about stage, you can put your jacket back on to prevent catching a cold.

* SCARF OR HAT OR HELMET OR WHAT?

Please, no scarf. When you ride the chair, a scarf will get a mind of its' own and wrap itself around the metal bars on the chairlift. Then when you try to get off the chair...oops, your scarf won't let you! Quite embarrassing, and definately will take you out of the "hot" department. Hat or helmet, your call. As a beginner, a hat will be fine...or if it's super hot, you should carry one, but then take it off. Headbands or earmuffs keep the ears cozy! If you take up the sport (skiing is the funnest thing on the planet once you get decent at it), go with a helmet...brain buckets are lifesavers.

I say it doesnt really matter how "hot" you look on the slopes. Unfortunally, people never really notice, or if your a begginer, theres a high chance your gonna fall, so thay could ruin how you look. But if you really want to, i suggest a nice hat, and a matching scarf. Then wear some really warm clothes, like sweatpants and a sweater. Then wear a heavy, perferably layered, winter coat that might also match your hat and scarf. Then some nice, water-proof, snow pants.

This should keep you both warm (trust me, you'll want to be warm if its a cold day) and looking good. I've skiied before, many times, so this is what I suggest.

Well, nude skiing is in these days, but if doesn't tickle your fancy then I suggest warm comfortable clothe made from cortex with a fur like linning. Cortex allows your skin to breath and keeps you cool when your hot and warm when your cold. Beneath that, just wear a t-shirt and light woolen jumper. Dont forget this thick woolie socks.

Wear a lot of layers. Take a lesson. Try to look good (the skiing I mean).

Can't tell you much about looking hot although at my age if you can breathe you'd probably look hot to me. If you need to stay warm you want to dress in layers and your outermost layer should be breathable. Lots of good ski jackets come with vents with zippers or velcro that you can open or close as needed.

Snow Gear (like Roxy, Burton, Spider) but anything will do. Just don't wear jeans, sweatpants, Starter Jackets, Sweaters, etc.

It doesn't matter what you wear, just as long as it's warm. You are going to need all the warm clothes you can find when you go skiing.
