She sounds like a concerned friend. It is hard to stand up and say what you think is right when it is not accepted. I bet she doesn't want to lose you as friends but has found this issue too important to ignore. A rotty is definitely capable of destroying a small human very quickly and easily. Thank your wife's friend for the concern, and then take your dog to a qualified dog trainer and get a professional opinion. (Petsmart has great people for very little cost. ) It is better to be safe than to be sorry, right?

And in the meantime, make sure your infant is protected and try not to make the dog feel too neglected.

With a new baby in the house, a Rottie or any other dog might be jealous. If you choose to keep the pet, you should slowly help Tank adjust by holding the baby in your arms (out of the dog's reach) while petting and talking to Tank. Make sure the dog cannot access the baby's room and never leave him alone with the babe even for a few minutes. When a baby cries, it kicks it's feet and moves it's arms. This could be taken wrong by the dog and make him harm the baby. This goes for ANY dog. A Rottie or any other dog usually is very protective of his family. When and if he accepts the baby as belonging to the "pack", he will protect the little one also. Some cities consider a Rottie as a viscious animal. Call the Animal Control in your city and ask them if they do. My city animal control staff was very helpful in giving me info when I bought a Rottie pup. They told me to make sure the fences were high enough so he could not jump over them because Rotties would attack other dogs or people who might be running on the street. I am sure you will give much thought to the safety of your child. Stop talking to the "crazy" lady for now because if you try to defend the dog, that wil just add fuel to the fire. Good luck to you, I hope you can figure out a way to protect the babe and that Tank learns quickly that the child "belongs to the pack".

You may not have heard of what the "crazy lady" said but it is true. Dogs can get jealous of a new baby because it was just them and you guys for so long and now your attention is going to this new baby. Dogs can get violent. I would be careful and possibly find a new home for Tank. I know you love your dog but what would you do if he ended up doing something to the baby? One thing is find a friend willing to take him temporarily until the baby gets bigger and perhaps Tank will grow used to him but for right now your son is too helpless to do that.
