Two things need to happen before the Ulster/Island of Ireland issue can ever be resolved (and neither have ever played part of any constructive conversation so far) -
1. Both sides of the debate should sit down and learn history. The entire island of Ireland (including the part that is Ulster) was given to the King of England to rule by the Papacy itself (one of the early King Henrys) a very long time ago. It's why the English went there in the first place. No, they didn't invade. (Such a historical fact is often ignored. It was never an issue until of course the time of the Reformation - which was much more successful in Britain than in Ireland).
2. Ulster (until its population wants to decide otherwise) will be part of the United Kingdom. It's called democracy.

A united Ireland should only happen with the consent of the people involved. The IRA do not want a united Republic of Ireland because if there was what is the point of the IRA? They make good money from a disunited Republic why should they give that up. If the people of Northern Ireland want to be reunited then they must have a free vote and that will never happen.

I think the division will always be there because it is rooted in religion and is very ingrained in peoples' mentalities. Even if Ireland was united again, there would still be a 'de facto' partition along religious lines. Intangible but still there. These days though, terrorism isn't as much of a problem. The trouble now comes from corruption, with lots of people there making lots of money from drugs and organised crime.

Hi all,
As a Brit (from Liverpool), Ireland belongs to the Irish and it should be this way. Putting aside all of the bloodshed on both sides, it is a nation divided.
However, there are fundamental issues outstanding...namely religious differences that need to be mended before there can be true unity. This can only be achieved by mediation, discussion and more importantly understanding.
From my miniscule understanding of the situation, this is slowly beginning to happen and for the better.

It's up to the people living there, and all but the most hardline republicans (the scum behind the Omagh bombing) accept this. Presently the majority want to stay in the UK. If the majority ever want to rejoin the other 26 counties, believe me, the people of Great Britain will be glad to be shot of the place.

The majority of Northern Ireland will always vote to remain British, and as these are the people who have to live there, then its only right that they're say is final. Im proud to have them as part of my country.

The British invaded everywhere and waged war on everyone. Now they're left with their tiny little island, a few more islands, a rock on the Iberian, and a toe-hold in Eire.
Nobody likes the British, nobody.
A breed of people that just can't lead. Everyone throws them off sooner or later!
