On your paycheck would you keep it or would you call payroll and see what the mistake was? I could really use this 500.00 (which i did pay taxes on) to go home for the holidays!

This happened to a fellow I worked with, though it wasn't quite as much. He took it to payroll and reported it and of course they were happy that he did. Of course, then they started reviewing other mistakes they made with regard to his pay, where they overpaid him but nobody realized it. They deducted it from his next couple of paychecks. He went for nearly a month without any pay, and this was a guy that was living paycheck to paycheck.

He said he learned his lesson in that honesty doesn't pay. If he happened to him again, he wasn't going to say anything.

I had a similar problem. I called payroll, three times to get it fixed and they never did.

However, MOST companies have a good payroll department, and they'll catch it on the next paycheck...and deduct that money..usually the gross amount you were over paid.

So, your next check will really be short.

I think you need to be ethical, and at least try to do the right thing.

This happened to me at a government job. I argued with them for months that the money didn't belong in my check. Accounting kept saying "don't worry about it". A year later they came after me for the extra funds. The Union wouldn't help. I hired an attorney. What saved me is I had documented trying to get it sorted out with Accounting for about 6 months. In the end, because I had been honest, they wrote off about $2000. I would have happily have had them deduct the overpayment initially, however when they kept messing up over months, I wasn't about to get hit for $2000+. Be honest, it's best.

If it is a mistake they can eventually take it away once they learn of the mistake, or force you to pay it back.

My advise to you is to contact payroll to save yourself a headache in the future.

I wouldn't say anything, but expect them to figure it out eventually. They won't just reduce your next check. They will have to tell you of the error and ask how you would like to repay it.

I know I don't really analyze my paycheck that closely. I just make sure it doesn't look short. I might not notice if I was overpaid.

Report it..They will catch the mistake and you will have to pay it back but you will not get the taxes back that they had deducted on the original total of the erred paycheck........ And now you are not to be trusted and can not be bonded...Not worth 500 bucks.

Call payroll, tell them the mistake, but ask them if they can reclaim it in increments. That way, if it's not a mistake you can spend it, but if it is a mistake then you can get an interest free loan.

I would report it. Don't want to be short on my next paycheck.

If you don't say anything, chances are that they would find out. Probably best to mention it. Or go to them and ask if it's a bonus for all your hard work :)

I would report it, sooner or later there will be an audit of the books.
