It depends on how long you have lived there AND how long you plan on living there. The small mark you described could be considered "normal wear and tear" after a year or two. Who doesn't have some kind of incident ever? I would let the landlord know you had a problem and tell him you are very happy to live there and plan time and chances are he will be okay with it.
The small mark you described should not be a reason for any kind of problem with your relationship with your landlord as long as he knows he is not going to have to fix it immediately or try and re-rent the place! Advertising and loss of rents could cost a whole lot more!
There may also be some local handymen that can fix the problem without him even knowing if you plan to leave sooner.
Don't sweat it!
Update:
Do your best to clean it up, but don't do any more damage. This is really such a small area that you really should be okay. I once charged a tenant $75 for a 2 inch by 4 inch scorch on the countertop back splash that was brand new when they moved-in and they only lived there 6 months. If you live there for almost two years and pay your rent on time with no problems this should be forgivable. If he wants to charge tou for a new countertop ask him when he plans on replacing it.
Maybe I'm too easy! But a countertop like yours will not last forever. If you get more 6 years out of one in a rental you are lucky. Delaminating is a much more offensive and avoidable problem.

You can reduce scorch marks on laminates by polishing with car polish. That will not get rid of it entirely. Start with a cutting compound, finish with ordinary car polish. Don't overdo it.

Your best bet re landlord is to tell them the truth after a few months but don't say when the incident happened exactly. Imply it was a few days before. If you have been regular in your rent and otherwise good tenants there should be no real problem. Changing tenants will cost the landlord more than a counter top replacement.

If you leave it too long it may be impossible to replace the counter top as by that time the available patterns might have changed. That could mean a full replacement of the kitchen.

Take a deep breath, grit your teeth then tell the truth - or something like it.

Any damages you do . you will be charged for if you move out . Land lord will find out sooner or later and by not telling the truth will anger him more..

Tell him; counter top is not that expensive.
