There are a large variety of prescription and non-prescription meds that you can try. Just depends on how much you want to spend.
Miralax is a good prescription medicine that works. You can mix it in 4-8 oz of water or juice, or mix it into food like applesauce or ice cream. Its tasteless.
Lactulose is also a prescription med that is commonly used for people with constipation. Its an orange liquid that you drink. Its pretty syrupy and a lot of ppl dont like the taste.
Nonprescription medicines can also be tried. The big one that I would recommend first is fiber. Fibercon comes in tablets or a clear tasteless powder that you can mix into your drinks or food. But you need to drink a lot of water to help keep the stool soft. If the stool is hard, your body has a harder time getting it out. Theres also metamucil, citracel, and store brands of these medicinces are also effective
A stool softener may also help you. Something such as Colace or Senna helps soften the stool so that its easier for you to move your bowels.
Laxatives are also an option. Citrate of Magnesia, Dulcolax, Correctol, Mineral Oil, Phillips no stimulant tablets (no cramps), theres a ton of them out there. If you look in your drug store in the fiber isle, you will find a ton of choices. Suppositories work fast, usually about 30 minutes, pills take a little longer, usually 6-8 hrs.
Theres also enemas, such as a Fleet enema, that you can buy over the counter.
If you try the Colace or Senna, and you don't move your bowels within 2 days, contact your doctor. You may need a stronger medication. If you use a laxative, read the box of what u buy. Sometimes, depending on what you get, they recommend taking 2 doses and if you don't have a bowel movement, call your doctor. Thats pretty much the usual.
Regardless of what you try, increase your fluid intake each day. Caffiene actually binds you up, causing further constipation. Exercise can also help get your bowels moving. It helps to increase the blood flow to the intestines and re-establish peristalsis (the movement of the bowels to push stool out).

Try taking Metamucil (or its generic equivalent) every day. This is a very safe psyllium product that holds on to water in the bowel. Consequently, you have softer, bulkier movements that are much easier to pass.

Also look your diet from the perspective of vegetables. One of the benefits of veggies is that they provide the needed fiber to stimulate regular bowel movements AND reduce the risk of colo-rectal cancers.

try this herbal tea it really works:
Smooth Move® is formulated to act as a stimulant laxative based on the traditional use of senna leaf for relief of occasional constipation. Senna leaf, as a laxative herbal tea ingredient has at least a one thousand year history of human use in traditional Arabian, Asian and European herbal medicines. Today senna leaf preparations are approved for use as laxatives in the national pharmacopoeias and formularies of China, France, Germany, Great Britain, India, Japan, Switzerland, and the United States. Senna's laxative action is largely attributed to its anthranoid content. Anthranaoids are compounds naturally occurring in many plant laxatives, including aloe, buckthorn, sacara sagrada, rhubarb, and senna
