My kids are having a pumpkin carving contest, I need some ideas on what I should do, The carving can not be anything scary or "Halloween theme" (axes, blood, etc)

Maybe it would be better to paint them? Go to your local arts and craft store and ask an associate what sort of paint would stick best onto a pumpkin. Or use magic marker. Or nowadays they also make accessories that you can stick onto the pumpkin, like on a Mr. Potato Head. Just make sure to lay down plenty of plastic or newspaper wherever they will be working. Carving just seems a bit dangerous for kids to be doing themselves.
