british are some of the most reserved people in the world, plus they have had lots of terrorism in London. perhaps you should try starting a conversation with a few of them. They aren't so bad.

When I first moved to London I had come from a northern village where everyone said hello to each other as they walked past each other. I did the same on the streets of London at first (not to everyone obviously!! but as the opportunity arose). I actually got myself into some sticky situations because I talked to anyone but once I got the level right, I never really found Londoners to be cold. You may be suffering a little due to the press and slightly more insular feelings we are having as a country recently and you dont say which area you are in which could also have a bearing on things. Generally tho if you are friendly to people, they will be friendly back (and dont believe the welsh bloke!!!)

That explains a lot! You are living in London! Londoners are the most unfriendly and miserable people on gods earth. They will sneer and fight you before smiling at you and are so emotionally crippled that friendship and a welcoming smile are completely alien to their nature. All they respect is status and money. Get out of "The Great Wen" and go to, say somewhere up north or down to the West Country where smiles come naturally. Screw London!

hello. I am british and I am happy to answer your question. It may surprise you to know that British people are not 'cold', but they respect each others personnal space and privacy, and why would anyone look at you anyway? if you are just a normal person they would'nt give you a second glance. If you want to interract more with british people and find out how friendly they can be, instead of stereotyping us all why don't you join a club or something like that. you have to get to know people then i'm sure you will see that we are no different from you. good luck making new friends

At the airport pickup, a friend of mine from Brazil, who was in London for the first time to study English, tried to salute his host family with a hug, their refusal in being hugged was explained with these words:" We're British, we don't hug, so no hugging". No doubt He got shocked. For a long time he had the words from those guys as official. Some years later back to Brazil, he welcomed an English citizen for his conversation class, and one of his students addressed the same question. The human being from that part of the world geographically named for us (them)-human beings as well, England (United Kingdom, whatever) replied: "Well, I'm from the land of Robin Hood, that is North of England, and people there are outdoor people, they love to go out, to feel fresh air, bike riding, drink beer and a nice talk. They love to chat, and when you ask for an information, in case they don't lack the time, they can take you straight to your destination." It's my right to hug you or not, to kiss you or not, to say hello or be forever mute, to glance a look to the side and see that there are so many other beings just like me. People change constantly for better or worse, and with them their mood. Unfortunately those you met on the bus or on your way to school were on their worst phase of humour. No panic. The best of it is that we learn a lot with our peers and they teach us on a great extent. If you smiled and didn't have a 'supposed-to-be' friendly look back, it doesn't mean everything is lost. Keep on smiling and being friendly. Keep on being genuine, without knowing you have built a positive and powerful atitude, you have healed so many dry faces, moods, and that means a lot. That's you. That's your essence.

i am british and i have lived in spain for nearly four years now. spanish people seem to be more friendly than the british but that is only because their culture is very family orientated. the british on the other hand seem to be colder as we are more independant. mayeb if you smile first they may smile back... dont expect everyone just to smile all the time at you and be happy... thats our culture and how we live, its not our fault if it seems "cold" to you or different to what you have known!

Unfortunately a lot of British people are very reserved - especially Southerners - its as if they dont wanna be friendly towards people (maybe they see it as a sign of weakness).
Northerners are more friendly, I've never been ignored by a northerner when trying to make conversation.
Regardless of where you are though, if you're wearing earphones/headphones people will see that as you being ignorant & not wanting to listen to them so they're less likely to try to make conversation.

since you want them to smile your way, did you try to smile their way and see if they respond? are you able to sit next to a foreigner while in the comfort of your own country, because i think its all over the world, even in india , most people make fun of foreigners without fear and i can tell you that most indians are not cold, but unfriendly to foreigners. maybe africans and carribeans are better, and they should be the one to complain not asians.thank you
