maybe the question you should check out BEFORE spending anything is what card will run on your motherboard.
before buying anything, put the name & model of your motherboard & the name / model of the videocard you want to buy into Google (or your favorite search site) & look for any @#$%&!?¿¡ post of upset users...
having had both ATIs (9600, 9800 (old) & X1600Pro) and NVs (5700 & 6800) i can tell you... ATI work much smoother if there is any problem (both in Win & Linux).
even though it can be a tricky card on "older" AGP4 motherboards, the ATI X800 or even X850 is the card you want, provided you are not scarred of going thru a couple dozen e-bays ads.
otherwise, try a X1300 or, if you can afford it a X1650
it rocks!
(FS2004 tops of above 50fps, but runs **very** smooth)
PS: a video card is not the only component bringing your display to life... the 9800 series was designed with the following PC specs in mind:
- PIII
- 256MB of RAM
- SVGA (1024*768) display, CRT
to use a X1x0/50 or a NV7/6x00 you should @ least have:
- P4 (preferably >2GHz) or equivalent
- 512MB RAM; if you really want to play 1GB would be better
- 1280*1024 (TFT) or @ least 1280*960 able CRT
good luck!

try an Nvidia card (i have used them for years and not in any respect had problems with them) truly love those playing cards! try a 9800gtx it is extra constructive than the ATI ones or once you're searching to spend slightly extra try the GTX 260. notwithstanding any nvidia playing cards in the two hundred's are very enormous so make particular you've area on your computer. solid success!

Tell me how much money do you want to spend, and I'll tell you.
I had an Ati card before and I upgraded to Nvidia ones on Sli.
It all depends on your budget !

Since you have AGP, the best card you could get would be this:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814150131
If that is a little too expensive for you then give us a price and I can recommend something else.
