I am currently getting a liberal studies degree (aka make your own degree) and I am taking a bunch of accounting classes to hopefully get my CPA one day. My question is, do CPA's or general accountants need to know a lot of statistics to be successful? I realize it is important for the GMAT and possible graduate school, but if I don't need it to get into accounting right now, I plan on skipping it.

I'm an accountant and I don't use statistics.

The most I do is compare the performance of entities, which really isn't complicated.

Good luck.

Accountants don't seem to know much about statistics to be successful - I don't know much and was able to do well on the GMAT, and did my MBA and CPA without a whole lot of statistical knowledge.

I would focus on getting enough accounting hours to take the CPA exam and check with your state board of accountancy to make sure you are on the right track to qualify to take the exam.

Statistics is not critical for most accounting professionals.

As far as statistics questions in GMAT, as long as you can do percentage and count cards then you will have no problem.

Best wishes.

You don't need stats to do basic accounting work, but if you want to move up into something like mergers/acquisitions or armitage you'll need some statistics under your belt. FYI, this is where the money is, if you're looking to climb the corporate ladder.
