.That is true. You see we had the Draft back then. Right now all the arm forces are volunteer. Back during the Vietnam era You had to sign up at 18 and you{ your Name} were put into a draft poll subject to be called any time after that.

While it is true that US armed forces are voluntary, the OATH they take(against ALL enemies FOREIGN and DOMESTIC )means just that, any time any place.
I also feel that it should be mandatory to serve at least a few years just so everyone who lives in the country legally will have a better knowledge not only of themselves, but of what it takes to set goals and achieve them through means other than violence.
This my friends may be an answer to the homeless problem as well as the people on the streets drugging and killing calling themselves PLAYERS. Where is your selfrespect at.
Thanks for letting me vent and go pull up your pants!

US military has been all volunteer for the last 20+ years! Vietnam in the later days, like after 1967 I think, the army wasn't getting enough people so they implemented the draft!

True - Most of the boys conscripted for Nam were snarfed up, given basic and minimal training, then sent into hell. Today, it's a better trained and more proffessional force. However, many are reservists who have been called back for multiple tours through an abused practice and clause in their contracts called stop/loss.

The military is on a volunteer basis, but I do think recruiting is here is a little underhanded. Recruiters prey on minorities and the poor. This may be a good thing and it may be a bad thing. This may keep someone off the street committing crimes and it may get someone killed for wanting to be a part of something.

America's Armed Forces are all Volunteer... That is to say the men and women who serve chose to join as opposed to being drafted by the government. They is no mandatory service in the United States of America. Even though they are referred to as volunteering they do get paid for their service.

I hope that this helps.

Yes sir,
100% volunteer military.
We can choose oour service: Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, or Coast Guard.

We can more or less choose our length of service.

We also have a great deal of latitude towards our choice of jobs.

it's a fair standard of living - not really very close to moderate...but acceptable...and it beats poverty.

A great question - cheers

Yes, the army today is all volenteers.
During the Viet nam war men were drafted and had no choice but to go or to go to jail, or prison. 56,000 young men died.
Now between the World Trade Center bombings and the war I shutter to think how many have died.
I have to ask, "Was it worth it?" Casualities on both sides.
