Ice

each word begins with the last two letters of the preceding word.

so the missing word must begin with "ic". and end with "ce".

what is less clear is the number of letters in each word, here 5, 4, 6, 7, x, 6, 6, 3. No clear rule. And, the last word, "end", is there to tell us that 3 letter words are allowed, i.e. 4 is not the minimum.

with this information, I'd suggest "ice" as the missing word.

there is no 4 letter word "icce". going for a 5 letter word of the form "ic.ce" also seems doomed to fail.

so, "ice".

hope this helps
