6,000 is slightly high, but only by about 1,000 miles. In fact, if you changed every 6,000 you would not find any deterioration that is out of line with norm.

I had a 1970 maverick, there was a sticker on the fender well said to change the oil every 6 months or 6000 miles. What changed? The oil companies are in cahoots with the car companies, that translates into big $$$. Just my opinion, the big rigs change there's every 10000 miles.

You should be ok, seeing that it's all highway miles. short trips is what contaminates your oil. The heating and cooling off of engine produces condensate. and acid, By doing a lot of highway driving, you engine gets hot enough long enough to boil this out of the oil. I've been driving for over 45years and a trick I found is, your oil should get dark or black. If not, it is not doing its job, it is leaving slug in your engine You may have to change brands to find an oil that suits you driving needs. By 3000 miles it should be black.

Not bad. The manufacturer says up to 7500 miles if you don't do hard driving. People all say every 3,000 miles because that's the way grandpa did it. But oil today lasts about four times as long as 25 years ago.

I've heard that the car manufacturers tell you to get your oil changed every 3000 miles because they want to be sure you do it often. But REALLY you don't need to do it but every 6000 miles. However, you get better gas mileage changing your oil every 3000 miles. I hope this info helps.

Kick back and relax, Steph . . . We change our oil every 5,000 miles and currently my wife's car has 187,000 miles on it and mine has 118,000 miles on it . . . zero repairs; both engines run like new. 6,000 is no big deal. In fact, on newer cars -- past 10-15 years or so -- most manufacturers even recommend up to about 7,500 mile intervals if you're not doing hard driving in dusty conditions, etc. Most of the people answering you so far have been listening to too many JiffyLube commercials!

It certainly isn't good preventative maintainence but then again not the end of the world either. You probably shortened the engine life a bit but better late than never! I would definitely change it again at 1500 miles and then get back to 3,000 mile intervals

The oil would probably be contaminated because your oil filter would probably be bypassing oil.. Ss far as engine damage minimal. But you probably took a little life off the engine. Car engines usually outlast the vehicle... just don't make a habit of it.

no probs as long as you don't have a consummation problem...
if you ran it low then some real damage may have occured...

As others stated, it's not the end of the world, but get it done A.S.A.P.!
Also, you said "got my oil changed". Learn to do it yourself, instead of having others rape your wallet to do something you can easily do yourself in 15 minutes or less. I started out knowing how to do absolutely nothing on my cars. I learned to do oil changes myself, and progressed naturally from there. Now, there's not much that I pay others to do. I save hundreds of dollars, and have the satisfaction of not only doing it myself, but knowing it's done RIGHT!
