I was wondering that myself! I read the National Enquirer (an unfortunate admission to have to make) and they have a best and worst dressed page. The people that they usually vote as worst dressed are usually people who look fab and are dressed at the height of European fashion. I suspect it's because they are more geographically isolated and therefore take longer to be influenced by the fashions of the rest of the world, and that, being American, they'd rather try their own thing before admitting defeat and catching up with the rest of the world!

America is a vast country compared to the UK. The UK is a hothouse, and being in Europe, it has the advantage of being on the doorstep of the established European fashion houses. The UK also has its own long tradtions in fashion. Americans mostly lead lives of separation, driving long distances to get to anything. That means it takes a lot longer for an idea to spread. Having said that, I think you will find both New York and LA have very fashionable people, and that both cities have inspired people on both sides of the atlantic. America does urban fashion like no other country, and you only have to travel the world to see America's influence is ubiquitous.

Different countries have different fashions. I was there a few years ago and wanted to buy my son some trainers. The shop assistant told me they no longer wore trainers - they're out of fashion.
In some countries, the clothes are much brighter and more colourful than they are here. I am sometimes amazed when I see what visitors wear.

All I know is Britney Spears is finally starting to look good in her clothes and she's looking healthier too.
A recent photo of her showed her wearing a thin black turtleneck under a black, white and grey argyle V neck vest and some decent looking jeans.
At first I thought I was looking at Lindsay Lohen !

The one thing i love about America right now is that you can be in style wearing anything you want to. We have jeans that are hip huggers, low rise, skinny jeans, boot cut, straight leg etc. I mean I love it. We have styles all the way from the 50's to the 90's.

I think because America is so spread out it makes it a little more difficult for trends to spread as quickly. European nations are much more congested overall and they are much closer to one another. Our states usually have centralized cities with larger populations but the smaller towns seem to receive goods, services, and information at a much slower rate due to distribution problems.

Because fashion generally does't come in sizes bigger then 18 (the average american is a size 30!)

Cos they have no sense of style. I simply don't think they're into fashion trends the way we are over here. Anything goes whether it's trendy or not.
