The word is not going to go away, but if black people take it and use it themselves, it helps to take some of the power of the slur away. It works for homosexuals and other groups of people that are discriminated against as well.

I agree 100% with that. The N word I think originated when slaves were brought to this country many years ago. The slave owners used that word alot. Over time others picked up on it and began using it. Now adays this word should never be used because it is very derogatory and offensive.
The same thing applies to other groups. For example, gay people can call another gay person a fag, but let a straight person call one that, then you have a war on your hands.
That has been the way it has been in the case of the N word too.
May God bless you for your stand on this issue.

'They' (african americans) have every right to use that word. It should always be kept in the language, people shouldn't forget. It should be taboo, but not swept from our society. It represents something pretty heavy, and bad but when someone like Richard Prior uses it... well suddenly the power shifted. I don't like the word, I certainly don't use it but that's the whole point isn't it?
They have taken it and turned it into a 'frat' word, or an empowered word.
I totally understand.
On another level it is a little like me and my girlfriends calling each other 'b*tch'. We know what we mean, but if someone else walked in the room and called me a b*tch? Honey they better run! ;)

I am black and I don't like it when anyone uses the word white, black, whomever. I think many blacks use it because they still do not full understand the meaning behind the word and that they are calling each other ignorant when they address each other as such.

I agree! I, too, feel that the word should be done away with. What I find interesting is how a word that for so many years has carried so many negative connotations can be thrown around as if it were a term of endearment. It makes absolutely no sense to me!

If African Americans want to use the N word between them, then that is up to them.Having witnessed the way that they use it with each other is totally different than if used by other cultures, other cultures use it to be insulting and racist.

You have answered the question perfectly yourself.
If they do not want to hear the word, then they shouldn't use it at all -- even amongst themselves.
It is hypocritical, really!

I dunno, I'm half black and black people tell me I can't say the "n" word. But I do anyways just to piss them off. I don't think anyone should be able to say it. All words will soon loose their meaning. I hope the "n" word does.
