I am putting together a zombie costume for Halloween, and since zombies are supposed to eat brains, I am looking for ideas on what to use to make a brain as a prop. I was thinking of spray painting cauliflour, but don't know if the paint will hold. Any ideas?

instead of spraypainting it, fill a glass bowl with a water and red food coloring, place the head, head side first into the mixture and wait till it turns the color you want, it will definitely keep the color

Since brain tissue is greyish, you could sacrifice a grey Crayola marker or a black one, put it in a a bowl of water, soak it in the fridge. You could then get something red, maybe some French dressing, and use a toothpick to draw some blood vessels (this is best if you plan to eat it). Don't worry about the crayola ink, it's non-toxic, kids eat it all the time. You can spread more French dressing "blood" on where you bite into it.....

Another idea is that you can get some ground turkey and make a brain-shaped meatloaf with it. You squeeze on an egg and quarter cup of breadcrumbs to help the meat keep it's shape, and spread ketchup on top, bake for 30 minutes at 350. Ground turkey appears greyish when cooked (tastes just like hamburger). Chill overnight in the fridge. You can freak people out when you eat it in fromt of them.

To "paint" cauliflwer the best idea is to use food coloring. We actually did this for a haunted house that I helped put together.
First of all you want to pick a head of cauliflower that is tightly together. Strip all of the green away and place in a bowl big enough to encase the entire head. remove the cauliflower from the bowel add water and enough food coloring to dye the water a deep deep red.( the color fades into the cauliflower) Make sure that the water level is high enough to submerge the cauliflower entirely. (Best done in sink so spills can be washed away easily). Wait anywhere from 1-3 hours for dye to set in checking frequently for color. The cauliflower will have a marbled effect hense forth resembling a brain.

You can also find brain candy and jello molds at craft supply or party stores. These are a little easier to complete, but Jello does not last long in heat.

Good luck, Happy Haunting and have a safe and fun Halloween!!!!

Fake Brain

Don't use Jell-o, it will melt! The cauliflower and food-dye is the best idea, but there are also spary paints made just for flowers and such. You can get it at any craft store that carries florist's supplies. They come in pump-spray bottles, and are water soluble. Spray the outside of the cauliflower, then blot off the excess. The paint wil stick in the seams and look very realistic! Better still would be to just drizzile a little strawberry-flavored syrup on it. That's in the supermarket with the Nestle Quik, and Hershey's syrup. It's clear red gooey stuff, and looks a lot like blood...

I had this idea one year.. and i did this :

1. put water, noodles (spaghetti), and red food coloring in a pot...
2. boil the noodles for about 30-35 mins.
--- this will cause the noodles to be overcooked...
3. drain ALL of the water and put the noodles in a small bowl..
4. Put a TINY drop of food coloring into the bowl of noodles and mix it up with just about a teaspoon of water.
5. Put the bowl of spaghetti into the fridge for about an hour.
6. Get a paper plate - plop the bowl of spaghetti upside down && the spaghetti will keep the bowl's half-circle shape.. and have a pink effect from the red coloring...

YOURE READY TO GO!! :] it sounds crappyyy--but it really looks like a brain... THe best thing is that you can carry the paper plate and eat it.. it'll freak everyone out!!!

My daughters went to Monster and Make-up Science camp this past summer. They found this to be easy. Buy some bread dough (cinnamon rolls dough is bes its already shaped but not the grands rolls) You want to pull apart the dough into small chuncks and make it all stuck back together into one pile (ever have monkey bread its the same concept) You cook it on a lower temp as it will be thick (use a round cake pan) for fake blood you actually use corn syrup and a dash of dish soap and red food tint not coloring. The tint is a creamy paste you can find at walmart in the hobby section near cake decoration supplies.

We used to do a trick with carnations where you put food coloring and water in a vase, cut the flower and the petals will pull the pigment into the petals of the flower, you might try to see if that would work. Or you could try to pigment the cauliflower with the food coloring as a topical solution. I also suggest the jello mold idea, they sell them at a costume shop here locally, but check places like eBay and buycostumes.com. If you mix the jello with a jigglers type recipe not just like the regular jello it will withstand a bit more use and not react to heat as quickly.

Some butcher shops still sell cow or calf brains, especially those in "ethnic" parts of town, if you're into authenticity. I sure wouldn't be!! For me, overcooked spaghetti works great. Boil the spaghetti a few minutes too long, then put it into your mold. If you can't get a real 'brain mold' (the Jell-o kind works fine for this, too) you can line a glass or metal mixing bowl with several layers of aluminum foil, and squish the foil around to make a brain mold. Put the spaghetti in the fridge for a few hours or overnight. Voila! One not-quite-so-gross brain.

1.try spaghetti cook it with out oil. drain it. as it starts to dry shape into brain after it firms, add a little spaghetti sauce, for the blood look. If that doesn't work leave in a bowl and act like you cut it up.
2.dry big elbow macaroni pinned onto a Styrofoam ball, then add the spaghetti sauce to give the effect of blood.
3. hamburger shaped into a brain with tomatoe sauce( the blood effect). Raw works best.

See if you can find a cany dish shaped like a skull....I think you may have luck at Spencer's or Christmas tree shop, and then cook some rigatoni ziti strain it and soak it in red food coloring....it will not look as close to a brain as the cauliflower but it will be mushy and easy to eat parts of it....
