What type of education should I get to go into a career in genetic engineering? Not genetics exactly, more of the DNA-manipulating aspect of it.

Lots of molecular biology classes and labs (especially labs). Also, if you can swing it, put in some time in a functioning research lab. Since lab work is the basis of the research, you should get as muchlab time in as you can. The knowledge can be read easily, but the experience of what to do if something goes wrong during an experiment is invaluable.

Genetic engineering I believe is something that a geneticist would do ergo you should obtain that education which is consistent with that profession. I don't believe that there is a separate field known as "genetic engineer" even though the geneticists that do genetic engineering could be called that. Considering the fact that when scientists altered a gene that was coded for color, I believe it was, in fruit flies they inadvertently altered they're behavior in such a way that was...well let's just say weird, I would hope a "genetic engineer" would know everything a geneticist does.

An undergrad in biochemistry, genetics, microbiology, or something close. This sets you up to do graduate studies in whatever field you decide to specialize in. Also definitely get into labs. See if you can do some rotations through a couple labs just to see what kind of research they do and then choose one where you are interested in the work going on there.

i would go with Microbiology as well as Molecular Science. they both are alike and quite similar but Micro focuses more on doing research with DNA and working to find cures for things such as diabetes, epilespy, but it also deals with PCr and DNA to a big extent by trying to replicated DNA at specific conditions, etc-that is what you do for you Master's Degree, besides writing the the thesis. MIcro is more hands on work which lets you work in labs for hours at a time. Molecular Biology deals with the molecular level as well as manipulating the DNA the and cutting it and re-copying it and changing things in the process.
