In the UK before central heating all rooms had fires and wooden flooring. In order that the floor did'nt get damaged, there was a hearth, usually with tiles, or slate or marble, extending out about12-18 inches ( 300-450 mm)
Forget about BECKBY and her bowls of water, when I was a child people would have laughed at you for such an idea.

Your local building code will tell you the distance out away from your fireplace that you are required to have non-combustible flooring - tile, concrete, brick or even a metal panel.

If the wood flooring goes in at this distance and it is dry and properly sealed and installed - it shouldn't be affected. Don't use Laminate or vinyl at this location - Carpet is actually okay past the required distance.
