Dear kdjags
If you have only done it once i wouldn't be concerned, but if you continue then it could get him to think every time you open his cage he is going to get food. That is one of the reasons it is rec commended to feed in a separate tank. When you open the cage you want him to think I'm going to get picked up not food. If he thinks he is going to get fed he may (key word may) think your hand is food and strike.
hope this helps you out

No, I have feed my female Cali king in her tank for the last two years and she is very nice, even more so than most Cali kings. But it is always best to feed your snake in a separate tank so it does not "learn" that every time you open your tank it is feeding time. It just helps avoid you getting tagged by your snake. I will say it is OK the first time because you want your new snake to settle quickly so it does not get stressed. But don't make a habit of it to avoid trouble.
Anything else just let me know, I'll be glad to help.

I don't think once will make a problem, but there are several benefits from feeding your snake in a different container-
you don't have to worry about them thinking every time you open their cage means food, you don't have to worry about them ingesting their substrate, and you can take advantage of that time to do some spot cleaning in their cage. Make sure you're feeding pre-killed!

you dont have anything to worry about ive fed my snakes in there cage for years and dont get any feeding response out of them whin i reach in to get them. it really depends on how often you get them out of there cage to socialise them. if you only open the cage to feed them then they will get you associated with food but if you are picking them up more than you feed, ou have nothing to worry about.
