Socialism isn't a bad plan philosophically; however, man has not NEARLY evolved enough for it to work. Socialism requires everybody to work for the same reward. There are people that won't pull their weight, thus breeding resentment from those that work extra hard, but receive no extra bonus. Then of course, there's the problem that it opens a society up to a huge amount of government corruption (not that we don't have it). This corruption is more difficult to deal with then the kinds we deal with now in that if you are completely dependent on the government, you are in a position to be forcibly taken over by a violent regime, that ultimately oppresses its people for power. It's happened every time so far. Those that speak against this government are silenced and killed. There's still someone with all the power and a people with far less.

Great concept... in theory. Will only work if human brain changes to the point where there is no greed, or under a strong dictatorship, like if you are late for work - 5 years of prison!
I know that I have my share of greed, and don't want to be dictated. If I choose to be a bum, then so be it! If I choose to be a millionaire, then I just do my best to achieve the goal. Freedom is very important.
P.S. When Marx was fantasizing about all that, he made a point that it would be a natural process, and that humans will eventually become socialists, and then later communists, but they would have to be completely different species by that time, much more intelligent. That you can't just make a bloody revolution, and make everyone live this way.

Socialism is a political doctrine that believes property and wealth should be distributed by social control. Any time that you have a governing power controlling wealth and property you provide no incentive for people to produce, think or work. The countries in Europe that have a socialist mentality have seen staggering unemployment and unbearable taxes. When the people and business are so heavy laden with taxes and government restrictions they are bound to be ineffective and bound to lower socio-economic status. This is why socializing the health care system and any other social program that takes money out of the peoples pockets and redistributes it to others is a recipe for disaster.

I dislike its essence in practice. What I mean by that is that, like all other forms of government, socialism doesn't do very well in real life even though it sounds fantastic on paper. But that's just how government is, I suppose.
I also dislike that it's used as an insult and that people automatically tie it in with the former USSR and facist Italy. My political leanings may best be described as socialist, and I often get called a commie when I'm engaging in a political debate.

it is a qestion of timing.
when you are young - you can live in a capitalism system.
you can work hard - and get paid according your skills and efforts.
when you become elder - the capitalism system don't need you anymore.
than - the socialism system is needed.
but - in our life, the system is not according your needs.
and capitalism - don't think the needs of the people and the world too much... the important think - the revenue

It does not work. It causes a downward spiral.
lets say you have 4 people in a socialist society.
Al, works 50 hours a week and makes 500 dollars
Joe works 30 hours a week and makes 300 dollars
Mike works 10 hours a week and makes 100 dollars
Fred works 10 hours a week and makes 100 dollars.
Now, at the end of the week, we divide the money evenly.
Al gets 250 dollars for his work
joe gets 250 for his work
mike gets 250 for his work
fred gets 250 for his work
Now, Al is a bit uspet about not making what he was worth, Joe is a little upset also. Mike and fred are happy, so next week:
Al works 25 hours, and earns 250 dollars
joe works 25 hours and earns 250 dollars
mike works 10 hours and earns 100 dollars
Fred works 10 hours and earns 100 dollars,,
Now, lets split the money
Al gets 175 dollars
joe gets 175 dollars
mike gets 175 dollars
fred gets 175 dollars
next week, Al and joe are upset again, while mike and fred are still happy.
Al works 15 hours and earns 150 dollars
joe works 10 hours and earns 100 dollars
mike works 10 hours and earns 100 dollars
fred works 10 hours and earns 100 dollars
lets split the money:
112.50 each!
Now, eventually, noone will want to work because it is not worth the hard work.

Socialism is already entrenched in our system with Public Schools and Social Security, and other entitlement such as welfare.
But its interesting that Churchill said that Socialism is the equal distribution of poverty.

wealth distribution is a bad idea, and against what this country is built on...laissez faire capitalism. But that is TOTAL socialism...some people don't understand that we have many programs based on socialism, and they prevent us from having elderly people living under bridges, and children starving in the streets...SOME socialistic ideas aren't bad, but when it goes to the point of wealth distribution, itr just isn't what americans are about...

Well basically, it always fails and does not allow for basic freedoms of humans to better themselves with the abilities they have. It promotes the beat down of free-thinking and competitive spirit. It's a catalyst for dictatorship that only has the real concerns of those in power to increase their control over those without power.

It doesn't work well. It ususally has to be forced on a population by an oppressive government. Freedom and Capitalism is the way to go. Even really poor people have become millionaires in the US. Give people credit, they really can take care of themselves.
