Let it go. Maybe it makes them feel better.

I usually let it go the first few times. If it becomes difficult to interact with them because of it, I try and find a way of pointing it out without hurting them or putting them up in arms about it.

Most people are not aware of being (or seeming) patronising. That they do is either their 'way' ... or my attitude.

Depends on the measure of their power over my life. My boss, I usually let it go. Actually, I let it go more often than not in any situation. If they need the ego boost, let them have it. I know who I am.

The best way is to subtly insult them back. Don't just take abuse, but don't cause a conflict. You have to walk a fine line when dealing with jerky people.

Absolutely...I'll be damned if I'm going to let someone make me feel inferior! You've got to stand up for yourself!

I can see why you're asking this question. It would bother me, also, if someone partonized me. You must be a sensitive person.
