There will, unfortunately, be no X-Men 4. (how could they, really, without Prof. X)
But there are a number of spin-offs in the works, including a prequel about Magneto and Xavier when they were younger.

At this time there is no plan to do another x-men movie. They are branching off though and there is going to be a Wolverine Movie with Hugh Jackmon and a Magneto movie with the great Sir Ian McKellan.
The contracts for all of the actors in x-men we're for 3 movies so all would get new contracts and much more money which might stop the project. Right now there is no script for x-men 4.
It's kind of like what they've done for the Fantastic 4. They are on contract for 3 movies, but they're already branching off. The New Fantastic 4 movie is going to have Dr. Doom and the Silver Surfer in it, and there is already a script being done for the Silver Surfer to have his own movie.
Marvel Movies has made hundreds of millions of dollars and they're going to do Iron man, Thor and Many others. It's also rumored that they want to do the submariner and the Rock would want to do that role.

I read online that there is an X-men 4 in the works coming out in 2008.

There is suppose to be a rumored X-men 4 in the works for 2008. It would be nice if it were made, I would like to see Gambit and a few other characters in it.

Not any time soon. Marvel is working on a Wolverine movie, Captian America, another Hulk movie, and Thor along with Submariner

No, X3 is being marketed as the conclusion to the trilogy. Besides, it would hardly be the same given some of the developments. BTW, I thought X3 was great!

theres going to be a wolverine film and a film based on magneto's life but that's about it, i doubt they will even think of doing anymore Xmen as the last was so crap as the director left and most of the production crew as well as the story line being crap 2.

I heard that there wouldn't be another one. It was meant to be a trilogy, and they've done that.
