Preferable you should start preparing in your second trimester, when your pregnancy's more or less settled (no morning sickness and stuff), and you are still quite mobile.
Basic necessities like clothes, pyjamas, booties, towels and diapers, you would have to prepare. Crib, do you need one? I prefer to let my kids sleep on the floor, less chance of rolling over and falling off the bed. Stroller, car seats, and bigger stuff, you can wait till the baby's here. Decorating the baby's room, well, have a baby shower and get your girlfriends to help out in contributing ideas, or just to rearrange the furniture.
When you are in your last trimester, rest more. Don't overexert yourself.

Since I'm assuming it's your first pregnancy, people normally wait until they are in their second trimester to start buying stuff little stuff, then in the third trimester, they buy the big stuff like cribs and setup the nursery.
The reasoning behind waiting is that you could lose the baby, then you would have a full nursery that you need to take apart, which would be hard because neither your husband or you would want to do it.
You just have to be patient. Your baby will be here sooner than you think. Take this time to really plan out the room and start buying little things.
Concentrate on your husband at this time, because after the baby arrives, you won't have time for each other and he may start to get jealous.

I'm also in the same boat as you. and every day i tell my husband that i want to go out and start buying baby clothing at least. the crib and nursery decorations can wait till I'm further along. but what i would suggest is start looking for baby sales with the holidays right around the corner you can get your hands on some good sales. and everyone knows that babies aren't cheap. its still too early to "baby proof" your house but it doesn't hurt to get some things now. Good luck

With my first I was 5 or 6 months along before we set stuff up. With your first you really can't tell your pregnant at 3 months. Wait until it is noticable to others.

I did go buy 1 pair of booties very early on. They sat on my dresser until I put my daughter's room together.

stop worrying so much hon.. you'll have your baby stuff in no time.. there's no right or wrong time to get it.. im almost 6 months myself.. and i dont have nothing set up.. why rush is my theory.. i know that in 3 and a half months im going to have a beautiful precious crying little girl in my house.. i dont need to rush that.. im happy believe me.. i can't wait.. but no need to rush.. if your anything like me.. you'll wait until the last minute.. i know with my son.. we put everything up and together maybe i week before he was born.. some people are just different.. take your time..

Just wait. You have a long wait ahead of you. Start making lists of things you want to register for, things you need, things that need to be done beforehand, things to pack for the hospital. Take this time to watch your friends and let them figure out what products are a waste of space, didn't get used much, did get used a lot, what they wished they had, what works well, what breaks easily, etc.
