If, as it is the case, I do not like the American government (and you have listed your question under "government"), I can not because of that say that I don't like America or the Americans. Governments change, but the country remains the same, and so do - more or less - the people. Bush, however, must take the "credit" for having changed a country of freedom into a country of fear, and it will take some time to turn this back.
To your actual question:
I have never been to America, I know the country only from films and books. From that I know that there are some beautiful places from Alaska to Hawaii which I would like to see, but then the same is true for many other countries, and furthermore, there are in my own country so many places I wish to see or to see again, that I don't know whether I'll ever come to America. Perhaps life (or the money) is too short.

NO !!!
I used to like the USA, I even considerd moving their in 1992...but since Bush has been president I have hated the country.
Bush has ruined the place and because MOST Americans are brainwashed into being patriotic they don't see this, they think that everything their gouverment do is right.
I know this is wrong but I have been wondering when another "grassy knoll" incident might happen?
Bush is a devil...a murderer...an ****...he WILL bring about the end of the world if he isn't stopped!
It is a shame that many of the Americans cannot face up to the fact that Bush should be got rid of...and someone else put in his place.
He has manipulated his people (by using the 9-11 attack)...
just so he could go and take over Iraq and their oil.
He is a very bad man who needs to be stopped!

Well, I love Americans, I love the country but...
I do not necesarilly like the government and the way they treat their citizens, disability benefits rarely get handed out to the people who need it (without much hassle and lots of time), employers generally don't hire full time to avoid costs for benefits such as health care but that's more of a corporate thing.
I hate the government and the big corporations, they are all destroying this beautiful country.
Another cultural thing that annoys me is the super-religious society of America, if I only got a dollar for each time someone tried to convert me i'd be rich by now.
I am Dutch by birth and am married to an American, I love my in-laws and love their family as much as I love my own, America is full with compassionate and friendly people.

i have no problems with the American people as a decent group of people but i think you government is a bit on the crazy side. you don't give your under privileged citizens a fair crack of the whip. for such a rich country your government likes to spend all its money on the military machine and put very little into good health care and welfare benefits. your nation also seems to be less secular than it maybe should be.when you start to let the religious right call the shots you're asking for trouble. they are little better than the Taliban themselves. i know a lot of decent Americans and am proud to call them my friends but they seem to be very embarrassed about the way things a panning out in the USA. we in Europe cant be complacent as what happens in America usally makes it way over the pond to here

I think it's a beautiful country in its own right that for the most part is nice...there is compassion there. I think most of the world has a hard time distinguishing between America as a foreign power and America via Americans. Living so close and being assimilated into their culture via entertainment and so one shows what an impact it has had on us.

i think we should consider the fact britian is a v v small island in the middle of huge water, with a v small population in comparison to other countries with limited resources and no real ARMY to call our own If we did not have an aliance with the US all you anti war people wouldnt be laughing any more. Britain would b targeted in 2 seconds flat and then you'll all be called up for national service and be back on rations and no freedom to do anything.
thank your lucky stars we have tony blair who does have some sense.
p.s british army is actually a FORCE- we dont have enough soldiers to call it an army in the true sense

There is a lot ot love and admire about America but not its recent foreign policy (which has made the world a more dangerous place), and I lost some respect for Americans when they re-elected Bush.

It depends.
I don't like the ignorant Americans who call themselves "Irish Americans" because their great great great great great uncle twice removed was Irish, and who donate money to the IRA. My great great grandad was Irish but I don't call myself "Irish British" or "Irish Welsh" and support murdering scumbags. Its pathetic.
The same type tend to take films like "Braveheart" as historical fact.
I'm Welsh and Mel "Nazi" Gibson was threatening to do the same sort of film on Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, last Prince of Wales. He'd better not. I'll hunt him down and give him a painful wedgie if he does. The man's a tosser.
I don't really like the fact that just about every film at the cinema is American. I don't like American Rom Coms. I can't identify with the characters and their lives as easily as I can with those in Brit com like Love Actually. Much funnier
I don't like the way some Americans go on (and ON and ON) about how they are the "greatest country on earth" (no they're not) and they have freedom (yeah so do we).
I don't like big fat ugly sweaty American tourists in sweatpants shouting and bawling and patronising me and my country when they visit Wales.
I wouldn't want to live there. You have to PAY to see the doctor when you're sick, fergawdsake! Medical care is a basic human right, not a priviledge or luxury commodity. Plus many Americans are very selfish - they oppose State Benefits because "I work my *** off and don't want to support a lazy bum". Fair enough but what happens when THEY lose their job/home and everything goes wrong?
But I have met some nice Americans. I'd have to say I don't like the country or what it stands for but a lot of the people are OK. Just not the ignorant, in bred ones.
It also makes me laugh the way they boast about having the "right" to own a gun. Yeah, America, thats why thousands of people die every year in your country through gun crime. Never noticed the connection??? Doh!

In a word NO! There is way to much crime and self importance. I think your politicians are focusing on all the wrong issues. For a start whatever happened to sorting out your own back yard before sticking your nose into other peoples business. Crime, poverty, health-care is Bush really trying to build a better America for everyone or just the people who financially are secure already anyway. He sure does alot of "caring" for peoples freedom in foreign lands, doesn't he?
