like in evanescence & nirvana's songs.. what does it symbolize? why is it used in th lyrics of these songs?

Lithium is a drug that would allow a person to mentally slip away. It's given as an anti-psychotic. If you listen to the words of the Evanescence song, she doesn't want the feeling. She wants to be cognitive. The Nirvana Song Lithium had another name before they named it Lithium and it just slipped my mind as to what it was called, but if you think about it, his friend was in his head, much like a psychotic person could have multiple personality disorder. I believe this is what they were talking about.

Lithium was used widely in the 60s and early 70s to treat depression and bipolar disorder. Suburban housewives were seen as common users of Lithium and Valium (the Stones' famously referred to them as 'Mothers Little Helpers'), and it was a dirty little secret of suburbia. The Lithium referred to in most popular music refers to the pills prescribed by doctors for depression, mania, and bipolar disorder. Hope this helps....
