Because without them, Superman would have nothing to leap with a single bound.
But seriously, we have two choices. We can build UP (and create monumental buildings that might be good targets) or we can build OUT (and continue urban sprawl until the USA is nothing but strip malls and asphalt).
And it wouldn't stop bin Laden. He would just have to hit basketball arenas, theaters, bridges, power plants, national monuments or amusement parks. I work in a six-story building, with maybe 200 people on each floor. If a 737 crashed into this building, it would probably kill all 1200 of us. This is progress?

A noble suggestion, its just that we don't have enough space in some of our key financial centers and other cities with big commerce. If we can't expand upward then we would have to expand outward, and you don't seem to be the type of person that would want big business encroaching on wildlife and our natural parks. Maybe in 50 or so years, everything will be electronic, and the business office would become obsolete, but right now, face-to-face business interaction in those big high-rises is the way our business leaders want to go. Right now we have to take the risk. Bid Laden would try something else if we all went low ground anyway.

Sonya,
are you serious?
Not only does a set of skyscrapers make a skyline infinitely more appealing to those of us that are city-dwellers....but they also keep corporations from building lower-profile FAT buildings that would increase loss of land due to simple square-foot horizontal profiles.
What would you like, up...or out? The stuff has to go somewhere.
Not to mention, that a big fat building in width is just as easy of a target as a nice tall building is....all it takes is a different angle of attack.
Seriously though girl, it is a silly question.

what a retarded question!....... tall buildings are completely safe. The only problem is that they are a good target for terrorists. We arent going to change our way of life because of those *******. If you want to bow down to these towel heads and give up then fine...... maybe we should ban stadiums as well.

we cannot act yellow belly and allow the terrorists to take over..we must be able to construct tall buildings to great heights..be it 100 stories or 500! if a building is confined to just 5 stories, it may well take over a whole city block, thus decreasing open space for newer developments.

4-5 stories...?
That would mean building 10's of thousands of new office buildings...things would get confusing and crowded.

Then we would have to expand OUTWARD and urban sprawl is already a big issue in some communities.
