On board graphics means your GUI (Graphic User Interface) device is integrated into the motherboard. If you add an AGI or PCI Graphics Card to this motherboard you would have to change BIOS settings to recognize the new card instead of the old integrated device.

A graphics card is usally purchased from a computer component retailer.

Right now some of the best graphics cards are running around $400. This price is for an ATI X1800-16x graphics card. If you have an older motherboard you will have to purchase the lower end 8x card. Only the newest motherboards support the newest 16x graphics technology. You should always investigate what you have before you purchase a new component due to the fast advances and changes taking place with the technology.

BR is right. On board graphics use your processor to think and siphon your system RAM for video memory. If the graphics are made by ATI or NVidia GeForce you may still get good graphics but they can lag your system.

A seperate Graphics card has its own processor and memory to handle tasks so it won't use your other system resources.

I don't have time to convert currency but a decent video card will run you between 100 and 200 US dollars. A kick *** card runs closer to $300.

Onboard graphics is going to use your computer processing power to create the graphics, a graphic card has its own processor to run this. It allows you to have good graphics and not bog down your computers resources.
