Considering the fact it was a game 7, the score was tied, and it was late in the game...it most certainly could go down as at least one of the top 3 plays of ALL TIME. Granted, they lost the game, and the catch was all for not, but at the time it happened, in the situation it happened in...how can you say there were many bigger.
With the exception of Willie Mays over the shoulder catch, and maybe Kirby Puckett's leap against the wall in Game 6 of the 1991 series, this one had to be right there with those. I mean, the ball was over the wall when he caught it...it was on it's way down, behind the wall, when he got his glove on it...and then to turn a double play...simply amazing!

Considering the difficulty and the timing during the game/series/season, that has to rank really high up there.
When we look back on this play 30 years from now, it will get docked points because 1) It was Endy Chavez (who?) and 2) the Mets lost the game and the series. But Endy is great. As a Met fan, I hope he earns a starting spot in the outfield next season.

If the Mets had won the game it would be all that people would be talking about. But since they lost, it will always be "oh by the way Endy Chavez made a great catch..."

No way that should be considered one of the best catches all time. Jim Edmonds has robbed guys of home runs plenty of times and most of those gems were much better than Endy Chavez's catch.

As individual plays go, it was simply AMAZING, to turn the double play after the catch was very Willie Mays like. The famous Mays catch at the Polo Grounds he turned and fired the ball to the cut off man to prevent the baserunner advance from second to home. Center at the Polo Grounds was close to 480 feet or so.
Hunter, Edmunds, Damon all the modern great outfielders wish they were as good as Mays. Endy's catch was like what Willie did every day, not to take anything away from it.

Not only was it an amazing catch, but he turned the double play right after it. And he almost dropped the ball over the wall. So yes, I'd put it right up there with Willie Mays's catch, although Mays did it in the Woirld Series and the Giants won that game, so that probably still ranks ahead of Chavez's catch. but not by much.

Yes, that was AWSOME it will or should I say is one of the best if not the best catch on the big stage of the Post- Season. I've been a baseball fan for 40 years and I personally think its in the top 5. Now if the Mets would have ended up winning that game it would have went down as the BEST

Great catch! What made it even better was he turned it into a double play. It will certainly go down as one of the best but if the Mets had won the game it would have moved up a notch or two on the all time list.

I think it goes down as top 3 best catch ever given the circumstances. Game 7 of the NLCS, game tied at 1-1 in the 6th inning.
Too bad the Mets didn't win otherwise it may be #1 of all time.
