You should check with your Web host. If they host PHP, they probably have MySQL up and running already.

MySQL seems to be a popular candidate. I'm in a similar position as you and am reading a book about it. Here is the Overview from the book:

"The PHP scripting language and MySQL open-source database are quite effective independently, but together they make a simply unbeatable team. When working hand-in-hand, they serve as the standard for the rapid development of dynamic, database-driven websites. This combination is so popular, in fact, that it's attracting many programming newbies who come from a web or graphic design background and whose first language is HTML. If you fall into this ever-expanding category, then this book is for you."

Here's the Book information:

To download the MySQL Installer:

Download the MySQL binaries. Both the binaries and the source code can be found at http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/. The link takes you to a page where you can enter personal info, or just click No Thanks to download the file. A number of download locations (or mirrors) are available; select one. Download the recommended version for the Windows Essentials (x86) MySQL 4.1 Installer.

This information is also from the book.

Cheers!
