Hope this helps :)
The chupacabra is a mythical cryptid said to inhabit parts of the Latin America. It is associated particularly with Puerto Rico (where it was first reported), Mexico, Chile, Brazil and the United States, especially in the latter's Latin American communities and Maine. The name translates literally from the Spanish as "goat-sucker". It comes from the creature's reported habit of attacking and drinking the blood of livestock. Physical descriptions of the creature vary. Sightings began in Puerto Rico in the early 1990s, and have since been reported as far north as Maine, and as far south as Chile. Though some argue that the chupacabras may be real creatures, mainstream scientists and experts generally contend that the chupacabra is a legendary creature, or a type of urban legend.

Are you thinking of what they call "El Chupacabra"? It is not a real animal, but a mythical creature of Mexican, Central and South American folklore. If I remember correctly it is decribed as a horrible creature that comes out of the wilderness at night and snatches children and animals. I'm sure there are plenty of places on-line, the website snopes.com (no "www" in front of that by the way)comes to mind, they have a section dedicated to weird animals and creatures plus a whole bunch of other interesting stuff.

You've already gotten some in-depth responses - but I believe El Chupacabra means literally Goat Sucker because they believed in South America that a monster came out at night and sucked the blood from their goat herds.

Its like bigfoot for Mexico and regions farther south. People "saw" a shadowy creature at night and "found" their goats with blood drained in the morning. Often times there would be a small Latin boy with a blood mustache in the background.
