Let me begin by saying that I am not opposed to conservatism. I believe in economic and fiscal conservative policies, but I do not understand the religious right.

They want to reintroduce God and "family values" to America. In doing so they want to ban gay marriage, abortion, euthanasia, and emphasize the traditional nuclear family. I understand how that lines up with their values.

My question is, how do things such as torture, lying to the American people, and promoting the wealthy fall in line with those values?

Like I said, I am an economic conservative so I support tax cuts for the wealthy (included in tax cuts across the board) assuming governmental fiscal responsibility. I just don't see how that matches up with Christian ideals.

Christian thought says that the meek will inherit the earth and that we should look out for the poor. It also says it's very hard for rich men to enter heaven. So how is favoring the wealthy Christian?

How is torture Christian?

I simply do not understand how the religious right accepts their political practices since they claim to be Christians but do not act on Christian belief.

It's as if they pick and choose which scripture to listen to.

As a simple example, the Bible says that people should not wear clothing consisting of more than one thread because it is a blatant display of wealth. Why don't we listen to that verse? Does it not suit our purpose?

wmcritter - Great response except for me 'believing the lies of the DNC.' I respect that you have bases to go off when challenging my question.

Torture is part of Christian history. The Inquisition and centuries of witch trials would be the biggest examples. No religion has escaped the ugliness of the human condition.

The good people need to be heard. That's the problem with Muslims today, they do not repudiate the evil acts of their extremists. I wish the good Islamics would try to be more visible with their acts of kindness, and show us they don't agree with terrorism.

And the same for so-called Christians.

One fool in here said sleep deprivation isn't torture. Yes, it surely is, and very painful.

I'm ashamed of other Christians for not speaking out against this.

First of all, you are making several assumptions. The first is that the "right" is torturing people, lying, and promoting the wealthy. The second is that the "right" supports these things. Those are both wrong.

I'm sorry you believe the lies that are fed to you by the national media and the DNC. However, just because you believe those things, does not make them true.

Another assumption you appear to make is that one must be perfect to be Christian. Christian means to be "Christ - like". Since Jesus was perfect, and we (being human) are not, all we can do is try to be as like him as possible.

Being Christian is like being an American. There are good Americans, and bad Americans. However, being a bad American does not revoke your citizenship. The same thing with being Christian. There are good Christians, and bad Christians. Committing one sin, or many sins, does not revoke your Christianity.

The religious right does not support lying. The religious right does not support "promoting" the wealthy. They support treating everyone fairly. Unlike the left which promotes stealing from the successfull.

The only thing I think you are accurate in accusing some of the "religious right" of supporting is torture. I'm quite sure Jesus would not support torture, but I am a Christian and I do. I don't think this makes me a bad Christian, just human. For example: if 2 people kidnap my child, and we manage to catch one of them, I would fully support torturing him to find out the location of my child. Again, I don't think Jesus would support torture, even in this situation, but I'm not God, and I'm not perfect. I'm just a man trying to protect my family and I know God will forgive me for falling short of perfect.

Hold on to your Republican cloth coat.
You may now be whats referred to as a fiscal conservative and a social liberal. Nothing Christian about it. In the old days what you are talking about was considered being a Goldwater conservative. Things change and the labels with them.
Hope you don't quake under the thought of being a social liberal because you don't think our private lives should be the focus of legislation.
After reading some of the posts here for the past few weeks I have to say I have seen some very unchristian Christians.

If early Christians had an opportunity to participate in Roman government (other than providing the food for the lions), how do you imagine they would have done it?

In fact, there is one Biblical example of an early Christian who avoided death at the hands of the Romans by using his Roman citizenship to show that his imprisonment was unlawful (Paul).

There is "poor," and there is poor. You should examine all of Christian doctrine to see how the Bible defines "poor." The Bible says if a man wants to eat, he should work...

Money isn't the root of all evil, the LOVE OF money is.

Lastly, the concept of a person enjoying the fruit of his (or her) own labor is sprinkled throughout Scripture. This comports with the idea of less taxation, btw.

How is torture Christian = It is not. But how do you define torture? The United States does not tortue - that is a mantra of the left political scheme to make our administration look bad. I'm sorry but depriving someone of sleep, making rooms hot or colder then desired and playing loud rap music does not constitution torture in this world. We do not put knives to people, pull triggers on empty guns, inflict severe physical pain, execute comrades in front of them, etc etc.....please get the idea of "torture" by the US straight and compared to that of our enemy.

its vested interest politics...as long as one's concerns are addressed it is better to stick to the leader that caters to them and overlook shortcomings in other issues...many of us are guilty of this since the alternative is as potentially disastrous to our concerns
