Water enters the cell through osmosis because osmosis is the movement of water molecules from a high water potential to a low water potential through a partially permeable membrane. Inside a cell there is a lower water potential than outside a cell so water will diffuse into the cell by osmosis until there is an equal water potential in and out of the cell. This is called an equilibrium.

Osmosis is the mass evacuation of water particles from an area of high concentration of water to a low concentration of water. The amount of water in a cell is lower if it is placed in pure water or a medium with a high percentage of water, so therefore the water moves into the cell.

The higher concentration is in the container in which the liquid is put in. Water will only enter a plant cell e.g. potato, because a plant cell has got a cell maembrane and cellwall.
