it used to be wilts and now it's wiltshire. there is no town with the county name (oxford=oxfordshire)

its always been wiltshire, oxfordshire all shire counties have shortend names by slang. oxfordshire is known as oxon, wiltshire as wilts, bedfordshire as beds- bucks etc.

It's true that there is no town caled Wilt or anything similar but Wilts is merely an abbreviation, just as Beds = Bedfordshire, Berks = Berkshire, Oxon = Oxfordshire, Salop = Shropshire, Hants = Hampshire.

These abbreviations seem to be used less nowadays as people have automated ways of writing addresses and labels. Also, of course, we have postcodes so the county is not always necessary.

Wiltshire DOES have a county town that it is named after this is Wilton .
