Long Play
it means there's space for lots of music (on a vinyl record)

Like EP - extended play (longer than short, but not as long as long)

I don't know if singles ever really got called SP (short play)

I think all of these were used to describe tapes as well.

LP as said by many = Long Play. Used to denote albums in the days of vinal. Not much used nowadays though due to CD's and now MP3's and I Pod's. The music revolution.

Long Player....

The terms LP record (LP, 33, or 33-1/3 rpm record), 16 rpm record (16), 45 rpm record (45), and 78 rpm record (78) each refer to specific types of gramophone records. Except for the LP, these type designations refer to their rotational speeds in revolutions per minute (RPM). LPs, 45s, and 16s are usually made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and hence may be referred to as vinyl records or simply vinyl.

LP -Long Play usually 33 1/3 RPM. With reference to earlier answer my uncle had a promotional record from Babycham in his radiogram(google it!) that ran at 16 RPM,the only record I`ve seen at that speed. LP`s were great for winding backwards to here the hidden messages.STOP ME NOW!!
